Germiston

City in Gauteng Province, South Africa, 14 km/9 mi east of Johannesburg; population (1991) 134,000. Industries include gold refining, chemicals, steel, textiles, and brewing.

Germiston is an important railway junction in the heart of the Witwatersrand goldfields. The gold refinery is the world's largest. Many secondary industries are sited in Germiston and there are large railway workshops.
