Gerstenberg, Heinrich Wilhelm von (1737–1823)

German poet and critic. His chief works are Briefe über Merkwürdigkeiten der Literatur/Letters on Literary Landmarks 1766–70 (essays on literature) and the tragedy Ugolino 1768, one of the main forerunners of the Sturm und Drang movement.

Born in Tondern, Schleswig, he joined the Danish army and served in the Russian campaign of 1762. Later on he worked in the civil service.
