Gevaert, François Auguste (1828-1908)

Belgian music historian, theorist, and composer. He studied in Ghent and worked as organist there; later he travelled in Spain, Italy, and Germany. He was director of music at the Paris Opéra 1867-70, and at the Brussels Conservatory from 1871. He wrote several treatises on history, plainsong, and theory.
