Geyl, Pieter (1887–1966)

Dutch historian awarded international recognition for his services to history. He was made CBE in 1959.

Geyl was educated at Leiden University. He was professor of Dutch studies at London University, 1919–24, and of Dutch history, 1924–36; and professor of modern history at Utrecht, 1936–58. His publications include: The Netherlands Divided 1936; Napoleon: For and Against 1949; and Encounters in History 1962.
