Gezira, El

Triangular plain in Gezira State of the Republic of Sudan, between the Blue and White Nile rivers, south of their confluence at Khartoum. The cultivation of cotton, sorghum, wheat, and groundnuts is made possible by the irrigation of over 10,000 sq km/3,900 sq mi of the plain.

Irrigation works are supplied with water from the Sennar Dam. The chief town is Wad Medani.
