Ghazipur

Ghazipur

Town in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, near the border with Bihar state, on the River Ganges, 72 km/45 mi east of Varanasi; population (1991) 77,100. It is a centre for the legalized processing of locally-grown opium.

It was founded in 1330, and contains a mausoleum commemorating the death there in 1805 of Lord Cornwallis, governor-general of India.
