Ghelderode, Michel de

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Ghelderode, Michel de (1898-1962)

Belgian dramatist. His plays are mainly on religious subjects, though they contain grotesque violence and eroticism and suggest comparison with the Theatre of the Absurd. Among them are La Mort du Docteur Faust/The Death of Dr Fause 1926, Pantagleize 1930, Fastes d'enfer/Chronicles of Hell 1929, and Magie rouge/Red Magic 1931.

Many of his plays are set in medieval Flanders, and reflect the influence of the paintings of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Hieronymus Bosch. His work was also influenced by medieval religious drama and the traditional Belgian puppet theatre, and combines lyrical and tragic feeling with macabre farce.
