Genghis Khan (or Chingiz Khan) (c. 1155-1227)Mongol conqueror, ruler of all Mongol peoples from 1206. He conquered the empires of northern China 1211-15 and Khwarazm 1219-21, and invaded northern India in 1221, while his lieutenants advanced as far as the Crimea. When he died, his empire ranged from the Yellow Sea to the Black Sea; it continued to expand after his death to extend from Hungary to Korea. Genghis Khan controlled probably a larger area than any other individual in history. He was not only a great military leader, but the creator of a stable political system. The ruins of his capital Karakorum are southwest of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia; his alleged remains are preserved at Ejin Horo, Inner Mongolia.

While about $4 million was used to purchase two pools of life insurance, the other $64 million was spent ``to further their lavish lifestyles,'' including a 2003 Aston Martin automobile for $250,000; a 2003 Ferrari for $240,000, a 44-foot-long 2005 MTI Supercat race boat for $290,000 and the Ghengis Khan watch, said Goldman. Even without full ratification by its member nations, the European Union is already accomplishing, through gradualism and deception, the greatest consolidation of political power in the history of mankind--more than the conquests of Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, Suliyman the Magnificent, Stalin, Hitler or any of history's would-be rulers of the planet. Previous blockbusters like The One-Minute Manager immediately spawned a host of imitations; a publishing season rarely passes without the appearance of some blockheaded tip sheet delineating how the wisdom of Attila the Hun, Napoleon Bonaparte, Ghengis Khan, or the Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton can be used to boost earnings at Kalamazoo Gas & Electric. |
