Ghosts of Versailles, The

Opera in two acts by John Corigliano (libretto by W H Hoffmann, after Pierre de Beaumarchais), first produced at the New York Metropolitan Opera House on 19 December 1991. Beaumarchais himself makes a ghostly appearance, and attempts to rescue Marie Antoinette from the guillotine.

Some may cry that this unabashedly lyrical, seductively tonal work is as derivative as The Ghosts of Versailles, the opera by Adamo's lover, John Corigliano, that achieved national telecast a decade ago.
