Gibberd, Frederick Ernest

    0.03 sec.

Gibberd, Frederick Ernest (1908–1984)

English architect and town planner. He was a pioneer of the Modern Movement in England. His works include the new towns of Harlow, England, and Santa Teresa, Venezuela; the Catholic Cathedral, Liverpool (1962–67); and the Central London Mosque, Regent's Park (1970–77).

Gibberd's best-known works were built after World War II, for example Landsburg Market (1950–51) at Poplar, London; the chief buildings for the new town of Harlow, Essex, in 1947; and buildings for London's Heathrow Airport (from 1950).

Born at Coventry, he was trained in Birmingham, and started practice in London in 1930. An early work was Pullman Court flats (1934–35). In 1946 he designed some prefabricated houses, and steel works at Frodingham. Other works include a town plan for Nuneaton; the new buildings of London Airport; a hospital for East Belfast; and the Hull College of Technology.

He was knighted in 1967.
