Gibbs, James Ethan Allen

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Gibbs, James Ethan Allen (1829–1902)

US inventor. He patented the chain-stitch single-thread sewing machine (1857). In partnership with James Wilcox, from 1858 to 1890, he concentrated on improving the device, with the exception of the four years he dedicated to making gunpowder for the Confederate army (1861–65). Gibbs was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He worked in the machine-carding and the wool-carding businesses before he experimented with sewing machines. He was the great-grandnephew of US military leader Ethan Allen.
