Gibson, Alexander (1926–1995)

Scottish conductor. He co-founded Scottish Opera in 1962; Les Troyens (1969) and Der Ring des Nibelungen (1971) were notable achievements.

He studied in Scotland and London, and spent the 1950s with Sadlers Wells Opera and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He was principal conductor with the Scottish National Orchestra 1959–84. His US debut was with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1970, and he was principal guest conductor with the Houston Symphony Orchestra from 1981. In 1990 he conducted Tosca with Scottish Opera, Otello for Kentucky Opera, and Tristan at the Bruckner Festival, Linz, Austria.
