Gibson, Charles Dana (1867–1944)

US illustrator. His portrayal of an idealized type of American young woman became widely known as the ‘Gibson Girl’ in the 1910s.

Gibson was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and studied for a year at the Art Students' League in New York. He worked for the comic weekly Life magazine, eventually becoming its editor. He also illustrated books and later painted in oils.
