Gibson, Josh (Joshua) (1911–1947)

US baseball player. As a catcher for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays of the 1930s and 1940s black baseball leagues, he was known as ‘the black Babe Ruth’. One of the most powerful homerun hitters in the game's history (he is unofficially credited with almost 800), he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1972. He was born in Buena Vista, Georgia.
