Giddings, J(ames) Louis, Jr (1909–1964)

US anthropologist. He pioneered dendrochronology. His many Alaskan excavations led to the publication of such works as Ancient Men of the Arctic (1967). Giddings was born in Caldwell, Texas. He gained his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and taught at Brown University (1956–64), where he was director of the Haffenreffer Museum of the American Indian.
