Giesebrecht, Friedrich Wilhelm Benjamin von (1814-1889)

German historian whose most valuable and exhaustive work is his Geschichte der deutschen Kaiserzeit/History of the German Empire 1855-94, dealing with events up to 1181.

Giesebrecht was born in Berlin, and studied under German historian Leopold von Ranke. He was professor of history at Königsberg, 1857, and at Munich, 1862.
