Gigout, Eugène

Gigout, Eugène (1844–1925)

French organist and composer. He studied music at Nancy Cathedral and at the École Niedermeyer in Paris. He was a pupil of Saint-Saëns there and often deputized for him as organist at the Madeleine. He married one of Niedermeyer's daughters and became a professor at his school. He was appointed organist of the Saint-Augustin Church in 1863 and travelled much as an organ virtuoso. In 1885 he founded an organ school, and was organ professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1911.

Works

church music; Meditation for violin and orchestra; piano sonata; c. 50 organ works for concert use and c. 400 smaller organ pieces with pedals ad lib for the church.
