Gifu

Industrial and commercial city and capital of Gifu prefecture, Japan, 32 km/20 mi north of Nagoya; population (1998 est) 402,700. The city lies on the Nagara River and is a centre of rail communications. Its industries include the manufacture of cotton and woollen textiles, clothing, machinery, and paper. Traditional trades, such as trout-fishing with cormorants and the production of paper lanterns and umbrellas, are also still practised.

Gifu was rebuilt in 1891 after an earthquake caused widespread destruction.

Gifu University was founded in 1949. Local attractions include the Chubu-sangaku National Park, which is nearby.
