Gijón

Port on the Bay of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Asturias, northern Spain; population (2001) 266,400. Gijón is a major fishing and shipbuilding centre and an outlet for the coal mines of Asturias (now very much reduced); products include iron, steel, chemicals, and oil. It stands on the site of a pre-Roman settlement.
