Gila Bend

Town in Maricopa County, southwest Arizona; population (2000) 2,000. It is located to the south of a bend in the Gila River, and 100 km/60 mi southwest of Phoenix. The Gila Bend Indian Reservation and Painted Rock Reservoir lie to the north. Originally a Maricopa village, and the site of farms established in 1699 by the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Kino, it is now an agricultural centre and road junction.
