About 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. The name denotes descent from Gilan, one of the thirty provinces of Iran, see Guilak. Beginning in the northwestern province of Gilan, where he was born, he samples the local cuisine, including walnut pastries, smoked fish roe and fried fish heads, and has a brisk discussion about women's rights with his formidable sister, Fariba, before visiting the ancient monument of Persepolis and the former capital of Isfahan, meeting ordinary Iranians as he goes. |
