Gilbert, Henry (Franklin Belknap) (1868–1928)

US composer. He studied at Boston and became a businessman, but later devoted himself to composition. He often used ragtime and African-American tunes for his thematic material.

symphonic prologue to Synge's Riders to the Sea (1913), ballet The Dance in Place Congo (after G W Cable; 1918).

Voices and orchestra

Salammbô's Invocation to Tanith (after Flaubert) for soprano and orchestra; Indian Sketches and Hymn to America for chorus and orchestra.

Orchestral

Americanesque, Comedy Overture on Negro Themes (1906), three American Dances (1911), Negro Rhapsody (1913), Legend, and Negro Episode for orchestra.

Piano and voice

The Island of Fay (after Poe, 1923); Indian Scenes and Negro Dances for piano; Pirate Song (Stevenson) for voice and piano; edition of 100 folk songs.
