Gilbert and George

English painters and performance artists. They became known in the 1960s for their presentations of themselves as works of art, or ‘living sculptures’, holding poses for many hours. They also produce large emblematic photoworks. Their use of both erotic and ambiguous political material has made them controversial. They received the Turner Award in 1986. Their work has been very widely exhibited, notably in China in 1993.
