Giles, St (died c. 712)

Patron of beggars, cripples, and blacksmiths. Giles was one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. His feast day is on 1 September.

Giles was an abbot of a monastery on the site of the present city of Saint-Gilles and probably born Provence, though according to a 10th-century biography he was an Athenian who fled to France to live as a hermit.
