Gilgit

Mountainous region on the northwest frontier of Kashmir, under the rule of Pakistan; formerly a British Agency established in 1889; area 38,021 sq km/14,680 sq mi. It is drained by the Gilgit and Indus rivers. The region's town, Gilgit, was formerly a Buddhist centre. It lies at nearly 1,500 m/5,000 ft above sea level; during the winter the town can be approached only by plane.

The Chinese Silk Road passed through Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (China) and Gilgit.
