Gillette

Town and administrative headquarters of Campbell County, northeast Wyoming; population (2000) 19,600. It is situated on the Missouri Plateau, 128 km/80 mi east-southeast of Sheridan. Established in 1891 with the arrival of the railway, it was a livestock and mining centre until 1967, when local oil strikes brought on a sudden boom. Large deposits of low-sulphur coal in the area have maintained its prosperity.
