Gilman, Henry

    0.06 sec.

Gilman, Henry (1893–1986)

US organic chemist. He made a comprehensive study of methods of high-yield synthesis, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and uses of organometallic compounds, particularly Grignard reagents.

Gilman investigated the organic chemistry of 26 different metals, from aluminium, arsenic, and barium to thallium, uranium, and zinc, and discovered several new types of compounds. He was the first to study organocuprates, now known as Gilman reagents, and his early work with organomagnesium compounds (Grignard reagents) would later play an important part in the preparation of polythene.

Gilman was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Harvard. He was professor at Iowa State University 1923–47.
