Gilmanton

Agricultural and resort town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, USA, just south of Lake Winnipesaukee, 24 km/15 mi northeast of Concord; population (1990) 2,600. The novelist Grace Metalious lived for a time in the forming mining village of Gilmanton Iron Works, and her best-selling novel Peyton Place (1956), later a film and television series, was partly based on events in the town.
