Gilroy, Norman Thomas (born 1896)

Australian cardinal, archbishop of Sydney 1940–71. In 1946 he became the first Australian to be created a cardinal.

Gilroy was born at Glebe, New South Wales. He studied at St Columba's College, Springwood, New South Wales, and the Urban College of Propaganda, Rome. He was ordained priest in 1923.
