Gilson, Paul

Gilson, Paul (1865–1942)

Belgian composer. He was appointed professor of harmony at the Brussels Conservatory in 1899 and at the Antwerp Conservatory in 1904. He was also music critic of the newspapers Le Soir, 1906–14, and then of Le Midi.

His teachers included François Gevaert. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1889.

operas Prinses Zonneschijn and Zeevolk (1895); ballets La Captive and Daphne.

Choral

oratorio Le Démon (after Lermontov); Francesca da Rimini (after Dante) for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra (1892).

Vocal

La Mer for reciter and orchestra (1892).
