Gimli

Town in south Manitoba, Canada; population (1991) 1,600. It is located on the southwest shore of Lake Winnipeg, 80 km/50 mi north of Winnipeg. The economy is supported by fishing, farming, and a Seagram distillery.

Founded in the 1870s by Icelanders, it spawned several other smaller colonies nearby. It is the largest Icelandic community outside of Iceland. The annual Islendingadagurinn (Icelandic Festival), held in August, and nearby Hecla Island draw visitors to the area.
