Gioconda, La

Opera by Amilcare Ponchielli (libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Victor Hugo's Angelo), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 8 April 1876. In the story, Gioconda loves Enzo, but so does Laura. The evil Barnaba does his best to thwart everyone's happiness, eventually causing Gioconda's suicide.
