Giolitti, Giovanni (1842-1928)

Italian liberal politician, born in Mondovi. He was prime minister 1892-93, 1903-05, 1906-09, 1911-14, and 1920-21. He opposed Italian intervention in World War I and pursued a policy of broad coalitions, which proved ineffective in controlling fascism after 1921.
