Lanfranco, Giovanni (1582–1647)

Italian baroque painter. Influenced by the ceiling paintings of Antonio Correggio in Parma, he decorated the domes and apses of many churches in Rome and Naples, developing a striking baroque illusionism, as in the dome of S Andrea del Valle, Rome, 1625–28.

He was the pupil of Agostino, and later Annibale, Carracci.

Whereas Giovanni Baglione, in his Lives of 1642, included more than two hundred biographies of artists, Bellori's was a highly selective group of twelve: nine painters (Annibale and Agostino Carracci, Federico Barocci, Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Domenichino, Giovanni Lanfranco, and Nicolas Poussin), two sculptors (Francois Du Quesnoy and Alessandro Algardi), and one architect (Domenico Fontana).
The first of these, undertaken immediately following construction of the chapel, consisted of a cycle of Passion scenes painted between 1621 and 1624 by Giovanni Lanfranco.
