Gipp, George (1895–1920)

US American football star. The son of a Congregational minister, he went to Notre Dame on a baseball scholarship and there discovered his great talent for playing American football. He was born in Laurium, Michigan. Still a young man, he died of pneumonia. He was played by Ronald Reagan in the 1940 movie, Knute Rockne: All American, commemorating the exploits of his legendary Notre Dame American football coach Knute Rockne.
