Gippsland

Southeastern district of Victoria, Australia, extending from the southeast of Melbourne (from Western Port) to the New South Wales Border, between the Great Dividing Range and the Tasman Sea; area 36,260 sq km/14,000 sq mi. The district is mountainous in the northeast, with farming and cattle-grazing land in the southwest. It has been a centre for dairy farming since the 1880s, and it has brown-coal deposits between Moe and Traralgon in the La Trobe Valley, where power stations generate most of the State of Victoria's electricity.

The Bass Straight to the south contains natural gas and crude oil reserves, and there are gas processing and oil stabilizing plants on the Gippsland coastline. The shallow coastal lagoons known as the Gippsland Lakes, Australia's largest system of inland waterways, are a popular tourist destination. They are fed by the Mitchell, Nicholson, and Tambo rivers, and are separated from the ocean by the Ninety Mile Beach.

The district was named after Sir George Gipps, governor of New South Wales 1838–46.
