Kyrenia (or Keryneia)

Port in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, about 20 km/12 mi north of Nicosia; population (2006) 24,100. The Turkish army landed at Kyrenia during the 1976 invasion, and the town was temporarily evacuated.

The British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Peter Millet, unveiled the memorial built by the British Cyprus Memorial Trust at the old British cemetery in Girne in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
However, under the subsequent Roman rule, the site was built into a city, and it was later rebuilt into Girne Castle, which still stands today.
There are a number of Crusader Castles to explore such as the one in Kyrenia (known, unflatteringly, as Girne locally).
