Girona

Province of northeast Spain in eastern Cataluña autonomous community; area 5,887 sq km/2,273 sq mi; population (1991 est) 492,800. The province lies at the eastern end of the Pyrenees, with its coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. The rivers Ter and Fluvia flow through the province, which encompasses mountain ranges, the plain of El Ampurdan, and the Costa Brava. It has small quantities of coal, copper, lead, and iron resources. Products include textiles, paper, cork, leather, cement, and cured fish; tourism is also important. The capital is Girona.
