Giurgiu

Border town and capital of Giurgiu county, Romania, on the left bank of the River Danube, opposite Bulgarian Ruse, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Bucharest; population (1995) 72,300. It is a centre of commerce between Romania and Bulgaria, trading in chemicals, petroleum, timber, salt, and grain, and has large sawmills.
