Glass, Louis (Christian August) (1864–1936)

Danish composer. He is best known for his symphonies, which include no. 3 Skovsymfoni/Wood Symphony (1901) and no. 5 Svastica (1911).

Glass studied at the Brussels Conservatory, Belgium, and came under the influence of César Franck. He was a contemporary of Carl Nielsen but his music more often recalls Austrian models of the same period. Some of his symphonies have been revived in recent years by Edward Downes.

Works Orchestral symphonies no. 1 (1893), no. 2 (1899), no. 3 Skovsymfoni/Wood Symphony (1901), no. 4 (1911), no. 5 Svastica (1911), no. 6 Skjoldungeaet/Birth of the Scyldings (1926); concertos for oboe, violin, and cello.

Chamber four string quartets (1890–1906); string sextet (1892); piano quintet (1896); cello sonata and two violin sonatas.
