Glassboro

Town in Gloucester County, southwest New Jersey; population (1990) 15,600. It is located 26 km/16 mi km south of Camden. A trading centre for a truck farming and fruit growing region, Glassboro also has canneries and manufactures bottle caps. It is home to the Glassboro State College (1923), the scene of meetings between US President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin in 1967; the college was renamed Rowan College in 1992 to honour a donor.

Glassboro was settled in 1775 by Germans, who founded a still-active glassmaking industry four years later.
