Gleig, George Robert (1796–1888)

Scottish novelist and historian. His novel The Subaltern 1826 is based on incidents that occurred during the Peninsular War; other works include The Campaign of New Orleans 1821, Chelsea Pensioners 1829, and a life of the Duke of Wellington 1862.

Gleig was born in Stirling, studied at Oxford, entered the army, and served in the Peninsular War 1813 and in the USA 1814. He was ordained 1820 and became chaplain of Chelsea Hospital in London 1834, chaplain general of the forces 1844, and inspector general of military schools 1846.
