Glendale

City in Maricopa County, south-central Arizona; population (2000) 218,800. It is situated in the Salt River Valley, to the northwest of Phoenix. This residential suburb is one of the fastest-growing cities in the USA. It is also a trade and transportation centre for farms producing fruit, vegetables, and cotton, and has agricultural processing facilities. It is home to Glendale Community College (1965). Luke Air Force Base, which trains jet fighter pilots, is 19 km/12 mi to the west.

Glendale

City in Los Angeles County, southwest California; population (1990) 180,000. It is located 12 km/8 mi north of Los Angeles city centre, at the southeast end of the San Fernando Valley, and to the southeast of Burbank. Many residents commute to Los Angeles or to the Valley's manufacturing plants. The city is a commercial, financial, and distribution centre, with some corporate headquarters and light manufacturing.

It was founded in 1886, on land that had been part of the 1784 Rancho San Rafael. The Casa Adobe de San Rafael (1864–72), once part of the rancho, is in a city park. The Pacific Electric Railroad connected Glendale to Los Angeles in 1904, fostering residential development. Among the city's institutions are Glendale Community College (1927) and the Brand Library and Art Center, housed in a 1904 Moorish mansion. The Forest Lawn Memorial Park, last resting place of many Hollywood stars, is in the city.

Town in Milwaukee County, southeast Wisconsin; population (1990) 14,100. It is situated on the Milwaukee River, to the north of Milwaukee. Lake Michigan is a few miles east of this residential suburb.
