Glenview

Town in Cook County, northeast Illinois; population (1990) 37,100. It is situated on the north branch of the Chicago River, 28 km/18 mi northwest of Chicago. A residential community, it grew in population with the establishment of the Glenview Naval Air Station in 1940. Glenview has some manufactures including bricks and tools, and is the site of several corporate headquarters. It was founded in the 1830s as the farming settlement of Hutchings. Located here is Peacock Prairie, one of the state's few pristine black-soil prairies, which serves as a botanical research station for the University of Illinois.
