Glock, William

Glock, William (1908–2000)

English pianist, administrator, and music critic. He studied with Boris Ord and Edward Dent at Cambridge 1926–30, and with Schnabel in Berlin 1930–33. He joined the Observer in 1934 and succeeded Fox Strangways as chief music critic in 1940, resigning in 1945. In 1948 he co-founded a summer school for advanced courses in music which is now held at Dartington Hall, Devon; he remained there as musical director until 1979. He was BBC controller of music 1959–73, and was knighted in 1970. He appointed Boulez as conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1971, and did much to improve the Promenade concerts. He was director of the Bath Festival 1976–84, and chair of the London Orchestral Concerts Board 1975–86.
