filtration

Enlarge picture
The separation of a solid from a liquid by passing through a filter. The suspension is poured into the filter funnel where the filter paper traps all solid particles but allows the liquid to pass through to be collected below.

Technique by which suspended solid particles in a fluid are removed by passing the mixture through a filter, usually porous paper, plastic, or cloth. The particles are retained by the filter to form a residue and the fluid passes through to make up the filtrate. For example, soot may be filtered from air, and suspended solids from water.

1) The established criteria for a diagnosis of CKD is 1) kidney damage for at least 3 months as defined by structural or functional abnormalities with or without decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), or 2) a GFR <60 mL/min/1.
At what level of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) should patients be referred to the dietitian in order to maximise nutritional intervention opportunities?
We measured urinary cadmium (U-Cd) and tubular effect markers [N-acetyl-[beta]-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) and human complex-forming protein (protein HC)] in 790 women and estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR; based on serum cystatin C) in 700 women.
