Gloriana

Opera by Benjamin Britten (libretto by William Plomer), first produced at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, on 8 June 1953. In the plot, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, and Lord Mountjoy compete for Queen Elizabeth I's attention. Essex is appointed to suppress an Irish rebellion but fails, himself becoming rebellious to the crown. Reluctantly the Queen has him beheaded.

Gloriana, the Fairy Queen, is abstractly Glory, but humanly she is Queen Elizabeth; and from other points of view Elizabeth is identified with several of the lesser heroines.
