Gloria

Enlarge picture
The plainsong melody of the Gloria found in Mass XV of the Vatican edition.

Second item of the Ordinary of the Mass, following immediately after the Kyrie. Although the Ambrosian Gloria is sung to an even simpler tone, the melody printed with Mass XV of the Vatican edition is probably the oldest.

In addition to the original melody, the text has been set to music alone or as part of a complete mass by many composers including Antonio Vivaldi, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Francis Poulenc.
