Glossopteris

Genus of fossil pteridosperms having tongue-shaped leaves with a netlike arrangement of veins; they grew to an average height of 8 m/25 ft. Their remains are found in Permo-Carboniferous rocks in the southern hemisphere (India, Australia, South Africa, South America, and Antarctica), and are markedly different from the contemporary flora of the northern hemisphere (Europe and North America).
