Gloucester City

Town in Camden County, southwest New Jersey; population (1990) 12,600. It is situated on the Delaware River opposite south Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and on Newton Creek, 5 km/3 mi south of Camden. It is a manufacturing centre, producing such goods as chemicals, cork, paper products, floor coverings, roofing, and clothing. Built on the site of the Dutch Fort Nassau (1623), Gloucester City was settled by Irish Quakers in 1682 and witnessed several Revolutionary War clashes.
